Is It Safe to Buy on the WWW?

It may be a little early for Christmas planning but with the advances in Electronic

Commerce, the buying and selling of goods and services Online, shopping is quickly becoming the next world wide trend of the Web. But, is it safe?

The answer is yes! With a few precautions of course.

One of the big advantages to buying over the Internet is that you, the buyer, have the advantage. Within a short amount of time you can review many vendors selling a product, do research, and find the best price all from the comfort of your own home. This motivates Online Businesses to sell at the absolute lowest price in order to get your business.

Once you choose your vendor, you are likely to come across Internet programs called shopping carts. Shopping carts are used by Web Sites to make your purchasing fast and easy. When you see a product you like, you select it, adding it to your shopping cart, which automatically puts it into a running list and totals your bill on the fly. Don't worry, you can remove items from your cart at any time and haven't committed to anything until the final step when you input your credit card information.

When it comes time to input that information, take a few small steps to protect yourself.

First, look for the lock and key. Most browsers show an open lock or broken key in the bottom left corner of the window. When you enter a secure environment, the lock will close and the key will become whole. You may also notice the URL change from http:// to https://. This environment means that any information you submit will be encrypted and can not be read by a third party en route from your computer to the messages destination.

Another important practice is to keep your receipts, electronically of course. Just create a new directory on your hard drive called something like "web receipts". Each time you make a purchase, save the record of the transaction to this directory. This may be a screen shot of the page showing your purchases or most likely the email that the company will send you as a confirmation of your purchase. Just do a save as into your web receipts directory.

The last piece of advice is to just use common sense. Like any catalog or mail order service, products are often described a little better than they actually are.

So, as long as you stick to familiar products and reputable brands everything should be fine. And, maybe, this year you can avoid the long lines and hassles of last minute holiday shopping.
