| How many times have you racked your brain for somewhere new to eat out or tried to come up with a weekend activity different from your normal routine? And, when visiting other cities, wouldn't it be great if you could find out the best places to go before you even left?
Once again, the Internet is the answer.
Locally, there is a site with these features called YumaCity.com (http://www.yumacity.com). Upon visiting this site, you will find extensive listings for hundreds of restaurants, points of interest, golf courses along the Colorado River region, entertainment, shopping, parks, and other interactive features.
And, for the person planning a visit to Yuma, there are also extensive hotel listings, RV Park Guides, interactive and detailed weather resources, health and fitness information, tours and trips and events calendars.
To find these types of resources is simple. Start by going to your favorite search engine. Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) is one of the most popular.
From here, type in the city and state you are interested in, click search and review the results. You may have to sift through a few poorly created resources, but, most cities will have at least one city guide that will fit your needs.
For a more detailed search, you can also try combining a specific category with your city. For example, I tried searching for San Diego Restaurants and immediately found the San Diego Restaurant and Entertainment Guide (http://www.sdro.com).
Two more clicks and I had narrowed my search to the Terrific Pacific Brewery and Grill (http://www.terrificpacific.com). After reviewing the menu and photos, I am fairly confident that this would be a great stop on my next weekend trip.
However, I believe the key to a truly successful City Guide is interactive features where all Web site visitors participate and effect the information on the site.
Going back to YumaCity.com, you will find a rating system on nearly every listing within the site. So, for example, people can (and do) rate restaurants, golf courses and the other categories based on their personal experiences.
By simply visiting one of the categories and choosing a one to five star rating for any of the specific listings, the site will update in real time based on your input. That way, you and future visitors can have an accurate feel for the quality of a listing based on other peoples experiences, not the opinion of the store owner or Web site developer.
There are also discussion areas linked in to each section that will allow you to post topics or reply to existing conversations.
Another feature that allows the public to interact with the site is the community calendar. Anyone can go to the community calendar and add public events for others to view.
For businesses, this is a terrific resource to promote to a very targeted audience of both local and non-local computer users who are all interested in specific information about our city.
And, if you have an existing Web site, partnering and participating in local city guides is a great way to boost traffic and interest in your site and business.
